ELIGIBILITY

BA degree + C1 level (e.g. IELTS 7.0) certified English language competence. The admission procedure includes an interview, either face to face or online, depending on the applicant’s availability.

The entrance exam for this programme is highly competitive. It therefore contains a discussion to gauge the applicant's programme-related motivation, professional experience and academic background. In addition, to pass the exam successfully, an excellent command of English needs to be demonstrated. The format of the entrance exam is an interview, with questions probing an examinee's professional acuity and language awareness. It will be conducted online for international students and f2f in the case of Hungarians applicants.

TUITION FEE

For non-Hungarian nationals: 3,500 €/semester.

TIME FRAME

The academic year starts in September and finishes in July. It is divided into two semesters, each followed by an exam period. The programme requires a 20- hour/week full time commitment throughout the two semesters.

VENUE

The Faculty of Arts of Eötvös Loránd University is situated in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The campus is in the city centre and easily accessible by public transport.

STAFF

All courses are taught by distinguished ELT professionals – both native and non-native speakers of English – who have extensive international teacher training experience, including courses taught in Britain, Turkey, Ethiopia, Germany, Russia, China, etc.

THESIS

The thesis can be written on any topic relevant to the teaching of English (i.e., ELT methodology, language pedagogy, applied linguistics). The thesis should demonstrate a systematic approach to analysis, either theoretical or empirical, which reflects a deep understanding of the language teaching and learning process.

TEACHING PRACTICE

One of the professionally most attractive components of the programme is the 50-hour teaching practice in the spring term, when the participants have the opportunity to practise their newly learnt skills with groups of real learners under the guidance of trained and experienced mentors.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates will be able to take on senior or specialist roles in language-teaching or related organisations, not only in the classroom (e.g. in CALL, ESP, young learners etc.) but also in areas such as educational advice and management, programme evaluation, language testing, syllabus design and teacher education.

News and events

During the spring of 2023, International House (IH) Budapest welcomed two ELIMA trainees teachers from the Department of English Language Pedagogy at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest. The trainees did their teaching practice at IH and were working with groups of young learners. In order to expand the learners' environmental awareness, the two trainee teachers created a lesson based around composting. The goal was to provide students with knowledge and first-hand experience of composting and to introduce the benefits and usefulness of the process. For one of their summer projects, these young learners also had to plan and design their own green playground. Apart from learning English in a meaningful, cooperative context, through this project, the students were also able to see how their actions can have a long-lasting positive impact on the environment. In recognition of the achievement, this environmental project was awarded £200 by the IH World Foundation. The team at IH Budapest and the university tutors at ELTE are very proud of the project and the trainees involved.
