What can our language do for Hungarian science? - A conference organised by MTA Hungarian Academy of Sciences

Since its foundation, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has been paying special attention to the relationship between science and the Hungarian language. At its interdisciplinary conference (10-11 June 2025) in honour of the bicentenary of the founding of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Department of Linguistics and Literature of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) approached the issue of the relationship between the Hungarian language and science from an exciting angle.
This time, the speakers - including our Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Károly Krisztina - did not focus primarily on what science does or can do for language, but on the role that language in general plays or can play in shaping scientific knowledge. The lectures examined how the methods, theories and hypotheses of the sciences belonging to the Division I of Linguistics and Literature of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences - linguistics, literary studies, classical philology, ethnography, oriental studies and musicology - and of other humanities disciplines - history, philosophy and psychology - are characterised by the use of linguistic tools in their respective periods.
