BÉT to provide grant aid to teach financial lessons

By Robin Marshall

HUNGARIAN secondary schools have until June 30 to apply for Ft500,000 ($2,300) grants to teach a financial curriculum backed by the Budapest Stock Exchange (BÉT).

The Foundation for Financial Self-Reliance, set up by the BÉT in 2003, is providing Ft15 million ($70,800) for the 2006/2007 academic year. The course is accessible on the educational Sulinet website (www.sulinet.hu/beniani), and is supported by the Ministry of Education.

"It is a well-known fact that Hungary stands well behind other countries in the European Union and in the region in terms of public savings," Orsolya Boszó, from the Media Relations section of the BÉT, told The Budapest Sun.

"This situation can be transformed only by changing the attitude of the younger generations. The foundation thinks it important that not only self-sustaining adults, or people with a salary, but also the generation of the future - that is, children in the schools - get acquainted with financial issues and learn to handle financial matters wisely."

The curriculum is aimed at 9-12th grade students and teachers at secondary schools.

According to the tender rules, the grant can be used for lessons or activities organized outside the classroom. Among other things, the BÉT has developed its own computer game based on share dealing.

"The Foundation for Financial Self-Reliance was set up in 2003 by the BÉT with the aim of raising public awareness of financial self-reliance, and to make it an accepted and widespread phenomenon in Hungary," explained Boszó.

"In order to reach this goal, we have started an extensive campaign to change the general public's attitude, with the central message that everybody can be a moneyman, that is, irrespective of their age or salary, everyone can find the right saving and investment opportunities appropriate for their specific circumstances."
